The Tablet →
And so in answer to my central question, regarding why buy The Tablet if you already have an iPhone and a MacBook, my best guess is that ultimately, The Tablet is something you’ll buy instead of a MacBook. I say they’re swinging big — redefining the experience of personal computing. Gruber’s take on what an Apple tablet will be. A little long-winded, but it makes sense – I really hope...

Every time you add something you take something... →
mnmal: Jason wrote: What’s the most ignored paradox in software development? Every time you add something you take something away. Screen real estate. Interface clarity. Simplified testing. Shorter development time. Certainty. Agility. Managability. Familiarity. Adding anything dilutes everything else. That’s not always a bad thing, just be aware of it. Be aware of the trade-offs. The...

The Tech Minimalist Speaks Out: A Home Theater... →
This article is flawed in one, seemingly obvious way: the concept of a home theater, is inherently antithetical to minimalism. No one should try to recreate the scale of a cinema experience in their own home. The home theatre is just a remnant of 20th century material exuberance. If you are indeed a ‘tech minimalist,’ you wouldn’t even consider having a home theater system.

Tips for a minimal office
mnmal: These tips are well known. I’m sure you’ve heard some of these before, however I’m going to list them because they are simple and they work - but you have to want it to work. As always, start small, little steps at a time, and when you feel you achieved one thing then move to the next. Soon, you’ll notice that you went through the whole office without pain. Let Go: Learn to let go. If...

DJ T. tour blog: Week 21 →
As a result, I witnessed an ever-emptying dance floor until – two hours later – I found myself playing to just a handful of people, most of whom were draped across the sofas or huddled the bar area. So, sorry David – if there is going to be a rematch, both of us should up our games, alright? This pretty much sums up why I hate going out in DC. It’s comforting to know that I’m not...

Close tab behaviour in Google Chrome →
mnmal: A fantastic article with lots of screenshot and an in-depth analysis of this specific UI element. Worth reading (even when I don’t agree with Google putting the close tab button to the right on Macs) I <3 Google Chrome.

Lucidica for Google Reader
minimalmac: In an attempt to bring some elegance and order to Google Reader, I made a mac-centric mod of Jon Hicks’ excellent Helvetireader, called “Lucidica.” It works with Safari, Fluid and Firefox. Perhaps some of you will find this a bit more “Mac like”. About time. Oh wait. I just realized this is NOT Lucida Grande… WTF is with the name then?

Welcome to the Minimalist Century →
The next several decades will revolve around efficiency. We’ll all be learning to use less, reuse more, and find greater value in the things we have close at hand. Knowingly or not, society has already begun its long march toward minimalism. It’s a matter of necessity, rather than ideology.

3 Strategies to help you Stop Shopping →
Make a mental note that you’d like to buy it. Go home, and wait 7 full days. 168 hours for those of you counting the time. If after 7 days you’ve forgotten about it, then you don’t really want or need it. I also like the cost-per-use tip. My $180 raw denim jeans: roughly $0.50/day if they last a full year.

This is something that randomly comes up in conversations with me, and the other day I was trying to remember Amory Lovins name. My friends looked bewildered when I asked who that dude from the Rocky Mountain Institue was.
